Criticism

At first glance, what is striking about Hubert Holley’s drawings and paintings is the bold way in which he breaks with fashions and the almost surrealist audacity of his composition. Using a classical mode of expression that cares little for relatively current tendencies, he composes and varies scenes inhabited either by mystery or happiness, the figurative purpose of which always conveys a message. His expert drawings are totally free from technical vagaries and hesitant proportions thanks to his training as a graphic designer. At a time when figurative painters are returning to grace and expressing themselves with varying degrees of confidence, Hubert Holley manages to greatly surprise through his efficient ease and particularly his concern for detail. The latter not only generates life and a sense of the picturesque, but also offers itself the luxury of becoming integrated in daring framings, in which astonishing superimpositions emanate either energy or serene charm. The artist blithely tramples sentimentality and excessive rigour, instead playing with the observer’s gaze and delighting it with not only the fluidity and effervescence of simple, confident strokes, but also with his colours, which ennoble beings and flowers by reproducing as much beauty as emotion. Here is a very great figurative artist whose durable path forward is in keeping with his convictions and mastery.
