It is in the realm of childhood that the greatest artists are born, and it is in the heart of this realm that Gérard Pelisse’s talent and masterful artwork draw their inspiration. Much more than a figurative drawer, this master of graphics and hyperrealism demonstrates, through the jewel-like execution of the work he produces, the art of a job well done. The sobre structures, pure lines and accurate proportions compliment the preciosity of details and the vast expanses of light, which he applies like a science to each of his pieces, as though they were an essential intake of breath in the stories they tell. Drawing with Indian ink and lead pencils, Gérard Pelisse exclusively uses the ‘Rotring’ pen to avoid losing command of this tool, having used it throughout his professional career, because in the past, this artist was a designer and artistic director in a major Parisian company. Passionate about history and great myths (as one will see from his representation of Saint George and the dragon, which he depicts in all its symbolic magnificence), we discover his fascination for monuments of character. For example, his representations of the Palace of Justice of Rouen and the Rialto Bridge of Venice reveal his sharp sense of observation through their geometric rigour and bright rendering of the play between light and shadow. In his more intimate pieces, we discover a sweet-scented and almost palpable emotion of nostalgia. Characters, animals, landscapes, houses and boutiques invite us to watch the theatre of life, as thought they were open windows to the simple charms of our day-to-day lives. Even if colour is not a characteristic of this artist’s work, it is with a certain delight that we note the beginnings of colouring in a few pieces, including “Floralies” (“Flower Shows”) and “Passementeries” (“Trimmings”), which offer a particularly appealing and harmonious poetic vision. Winner of countless distinctions, Gérard Pelisse’s awards include Prize for drawing in 2014 from the prestigious Taylor Foundation. A self-taught artist, with the quiet wisdom and knowledge of those who have a respect for work and a clear sense of values, Gérard Pelisse conveys, through his work’s authenticity, grandeur and perfection, his passion for drawing and his ever-unchanging life essence.
