Criticism

Philippe LERAY can boast half a century of painting, and now this Parisian-born artist lives and creates in Pays d’Auge in Normandy. Trained as a decorator, he devoted himself at a young age to drawing, painting, and contemporary furniture whilst simultaneously giving lessons in his studio “L’Art du Temps”, where he also welcomes exhibitions by his artist friends. All this is not forgetting the animal domain and also sculpture, in which he excels. He confirms his sensitivity in statuary works with flowing and expressive ridges, depicting beings in their daily lives and nudes full of grace and emotion. Yet experience and quality are essential for Philippe LERAY: beginning with his excellent Indian ink drawings and his enviably brilliant and perfectly executed watercolours, this artist has developed, from within his soul, a clear figurative style through his paintings and pastels. The composition is judicious in both his landscapes and seaside scenes, which are picturesque and full of vitality. Such bright, convincing and fascinating colours can also be seen in his dynamic representations of animals with their daring lighting effects. The same is true of his few purely classical trophies, not forgetting his portraits and nudes of a contemporary feel, which masterly bring to life this art and its remarkable and appealing realism.
