Cette exposition a reçu le label d'intérêt national pour l'année 2011 , décerné par le Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication

« L’Europe des Esprits ou la fascination de l’occulte, 1750-1950 », est une exposition pluridisciplinaire qui explore l’emprise de l’occulte chez les artistes, penseurs et savants, dans toute l’Europe, au fil des époques décisives de l’histoire de la modernité.

L’exposition est organisée en trois volets qui traitent respectivement :

- de la création artistique (peinture, dessin, sculpture, gravure et photographie) et littéraire abordée à travers le prisme de l’irrationnel et de l’obscur,

- de la tradition ésotérique revisitée dans une vaste perspective chronologique qui embrasse ses textes fondateurs et son iconographie imprimée,

- des relations entre phénomènes occultes et science, à travers l’évocation de figures de savants et d’expériences et la présentation d’instruments scientifiques.

Réunissant quelque 500 œuvres, 150 objets scientifiques, 150 livres et une centaine de documents, provenant de 25 pays européens, L’Europe des Esprits se développe au Musée d’Art moderne et contemporain de la Ville de Strasbourg sur plus de 2000 m2.

This event is recognized by the Minister of Culture and Communication as an exhibition of “national interest”.

‘Europe and the Spirit World or the Fascination with the Occult, 1750-1950’ is a cross- disciplinary exhibition exploring the influence of the occult on artists, thinkers, writers and scholars throughout Europe, at decisive moments in the history of the modern world. The exhibition is organized into three sections:

- The creative arts: painting, drawing, sculpture, print-making and photography, the literature of the irrational and unexplained.

- The esoteric tradition revisited, with an extensive chronological survey encompassing the movement’s foundational texts and print iconography.

- The relationship between occult phenomena and the scientific world, through key scholarly figures and thinkers, and an examination of their experiments and scientific instruments.

With some 500 works of art, 150 scientific artefacts, 150 books and 100 documents from a host of European countries, Europe and the Spirit World will be presented in a dedicated 2500-m2 space at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Strasbourg.

« Les rivières silencieuses » pourraient servir de titre à la plupart de ses toiles. Autour de ces rivières, il cultive le flou, l'incertain, les ombres. Ses horizons sont lointains, fondus dans la brume. Le peintre refuse de les rapprocher. Plus nets, ils seraient plus tranchants. Tranchants, ils pourraient blesser. Celui qui regarde et celui qui peint car un tableau peut blesser tout comme il peut montrer des blessures. Celles qui sautent aux yeux et celles que l'on cache au plus profond de soi. Jean-Serge Seiler est un homme en quête de profondeur, de spontanéité et d'harmonie. C'est un homme stylé. Peindre les choses telles qu'elles sont serait pour lui sans intérêt. Ses paysages existent essentiellement dans son coeur. Il les rêve. Ils appartiennent à son monde intérieur. Peindre sur le motif, ce n'est pas son affaire.

“Silent Rivers” could be an apt title for most of his paintings. Around these rivers, he crafts what is blurry, uncertain, and shadows. His horizons are far away, melting into the mist. The painter refuses to bring them closer. Clearer, they would be sharper. Sharper, they could hurt: hurt he who observes and he who paints because a canvas can hurt just as it can show hurts, both those that are obvious and those that we hide deep inside us. Jean-Serge Seiler is a man in search of depth, spontaneity and harmony. He is a man of style. To paint things as they are would be pointless for him. His landscapes exist for the most part in his heart. He dreams them up. They belong to his interior world. Painting out of doors is not his concern.

L'exposition Mais quel cirque ! Chagall et Léger au pays des cercles en action organisée par les musées nationaux du XXe siècle des Alpes-Maritimes est présentée en deux volets au musée national Marc Chagall et au musée national Fernand Léger. Elle met en lumière la fascination des deux artistes pour ce spectacle devenu très populaire depuis la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle et qui constitue un motif récurrent d'inspiration dans leur production.
"Mais quel cirque !" disait Chagall quand Léger proposait "Allez au cirque. Vous quittez vos rectangles, vos fenêtres géométriques et vous allez au pays des cercles en action".
De Degas à Picasso en passant par Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, Rouault, Matisse ou Calder, l'univers du cirque a exercé une influence majeure sur l'avant-garde artistique depuis l'Impressionnisme. L'analogie entre la forme ronde de la piste et celle de la terre illustre la métaphore du regard posé par les artistes sur notre monde moderne. Précurseur des loisirs de masse, le cirque devient une attraction pour tous, petits et grands, ouvriers et aristocrates. "Le cirque a été l'événement de mon enfance et voilà qu'il est revenu dans ma peinture", confiait ainsi Fernand Léger à la fin de sa vie. "J'ai imaginé mon cirque dans les heures nocturnes. Il est au milieu de ma chambre. On entend les rires et les cris" écrivait Marc Chagall.

Malgré des démarches distinctes, Chagall et Léger ont en commun d'avoir puisé de nombreuses figures dans l'univers du cirque. Dès sa série des Contrastes de formes avant la Grande Guerre, Léger élabore ainsi une écriture plastique apte à traduire le tourbillon de la vie moderne grâce aux effets contrastés des lignes et des couleurs. A la fin de sa vie, il se souvient de l'émotion populaire suscitée par l'arrivée du cirque de son enfance normande à Argentan. Accompagné de ses amis poètes, écrivains, peintres et musiciens tels que Blaise Cendrars, Guillaume Apollinaire, Darius Milhaud, Max Jacob ou Robert Delaunay, il fréquente assidûment le cirque Medrano et le trio de clowns Fratellini. De son côté, Marc Chagall est attiré par l'univers du cirque ambulant et des musiciens qui lui rappelle son enfance juive à Vitebsk, en Russie. La magie des couleurs et des sons constitue un support de création poétique. Pour lui, le saltimbanque est une allégorie de l'artiste et il cultive ce thème comme une métaphore de la vie.
Autour des livres d'artistes édités par Tériade aux éditions Verve en 1950 pour Léger et en 1967 pour Chagall, l'exposition rassemble une sélection d'études, de gouaches préparatoires, de pages manuscrites ou imprimées. Grâce aux exemplaires originaux du livre Cirque offerts en 1969 par Nadia Léger et Georges Bauquier et en 1995 par Alice Tériade, veuve de l'éditeur, le musée national Fernand Léger présente l'ouvrage intégralement déployé. Cet événement offre l'occasion rare d'admirer un chef-d'oeuvre de la bibliophilie d'art du XXe siècle. Il est accompagné d'un florilège de peintures, de dessins et de céramiques sur le thème du cirque provenant de la collection et de prêts. Au musée national Marc Chagall sont présentées 38 gouaches d'une collection particulière. Peintes par l'artiste en 1955, elles illustrent 10 ans plus tard le recueil de ses textes sur le cirque édité par Tériade. Enfin, des prêts de la collection Alain Frère permettent d'évoquer par des costumes, des photographies et des affiches l'univers fascinant de la piste, source de divertissement pour le public et d'inspiration pour nos artistes.

The exhibition “Oh what a circus! Chagall and Léger in the land of circles in action”, organised by the musées nationaux du XXe siècle des Alpes-Maritimes is presented in two parts at the Marc Chagall Museum and the Fernand Léger Museum. It highlights two artists’ fascination for the circus which became very popular in the second half of the 19th century and represents a recurrent source of inspiration in their production.

"Oh what a circus!" said Chagall when Léger suggested "Go to the circus. You leave your rectangles, your geometric windows and you go to the land of circles in action".

From Degas to Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec to Renoir, Rouault to Matisse and Calder, the world of the Big Top exerted a major influence on the artistic avant-garde movement after impressionism. The analogy between the round shape of the ring and that of the Earth illustrates the metaphor the artists adopted to explain our modern world. A precursor to mass leisure activities, the circus became an attraction that everyone, old or young, upper or lower-class, could enjoy. "The circus was the event that marked my childhood and now it is back in my painting", confided Fernand Léger at the end of his life. "I imagined my circus in the hours of darkness. It was in my room. You could hear the laughter and shouting" wrote Marc Chagall.

Despite their different approaches, Chagall and Léger had one source of inspiration in common which was the many characters in the circus world. Right from his series “Contrastes de formes” produced before the Great War, Léger developed a visual writing that was ideal for translating the vortex of modern life through creating contrasting effects of lines and colours. At the end of his life, he remembers the excitement prompted by the arrival of the circus when he was a child in Argentan in Normandy. Accompanied by his friends; poets, writers, painters and musicians, including Blaise Cendrars, Guillaume Apollinaire, Darius Milhaud, Max Jacob and Robert Delaunay, he assiduously attended the Medrano circus and the trio of clowns Fratellini. As for Marc Chagall, he was attracted by the universe of the travelling circus and its musicians who reminded him of his Jewish childhood in Vitebsk, Russia. The magic of the colours and sounds is a medium of poetic creation. For him, the somersault is an allegory of the artist and he develops this theme as a metaphor for life.

In addition to the artists’ books edited by Tériade at Verve publishers for Léger in 1950 and for Chagall in 1967, the exhibition brings together a selection of studies, preparatory gouaches, and handwritten and printed pages. With the original copies of the book “Cirque” offered in 1969 by Nadia Léger and Georges Bauquier, and in 1995 by Alice Tériade, the editor’s widow, the Fernand Léger Museum presents the book in its entirety. This event offers the rare opportunity to admire a masterpiece of 20th century bibliophily. It is accompanied by a collection of paintings, drawings and ceramics on the theme of the circus from various collections. The Marc Chagall Museum presents 38 gouaches from a private collection. Painted by the artist in 1955, they illustrate 10 years later the collection of texts on the circus edited by Tériade. Finally, the works on loan from the Frère Alain collection evoke through costumes, photographs and posters the fascinating world of the ring; that source of public entertainment and inspiration for our artists.
