Born in Normandy, Jean-Pierre Lépy settled on the Côte de Nacre, of which he is particularly fond. After training at the Fine Arts School of Caen, he went on to teach visual arts. His studies of Visual Arts and Art History enlightened him to the reality of contemporary abstraction, which he adopted for his own painting. As a member of the Société des Artistes bas-normands since 1983, he has participated in regional exhibitions and won several awards, including the Prix de la Main d’Or from the Academic Institute of Paris.
Jean-Pierre Lépy’s work appears to be influenced by various American abstract tendencies such as the Color Field movement, which emerged in the United States after the Second World War. Color Field is characterised by the creation of tensions between coloured “fields”, reflecting the artists’ state of mind and aiming to provoke a purely pictorial emotion in the viewer.
This form of abstraction is wholly consistent with Jean-Pierre Lépy’s work.
The artist’s brushstroke leaves nothing to chance, and no reference is made to reality in his paintings. His compositions convey a perfect balance in the division of conflicting worlds. Broad sweeps of paint on canvas create a structured rhythm and form a common thread between his works. The painter leaves no room for figuration or detail. His evocations of an opaque, two-dimensional world steeped in colour are subject only to the horizontal line that separates the monochrome fields. It is this recurrent theme that seems to provide the artist with endless possibilities for exploration. The sublimely orchestrated juxtaposition of these two apparently opposing worlds raises questions and appears to be an invitation to meditation and silence.
This is the true essence of abstraction as intended by Jean-Pierre Lépy, who certainly reaches his objective in this artwork of utmost coherence.
